3. The Church

You have just entered the Carthusian Church of Valldemossa. This church was the main building and spiritual centre of the monastery. This is where the monks would perform liturgical prayers – official public prayers. Construction on the church began in 1751 when the Carthusian monastery. which was originally housed within the Palace of King Sancho. was expanded. After several decades. construction was completed and the church was inaugurated with the pope’s blessing in 1812. This church has a Latin cross with a barrel vault and a dome over the transept. This building is very representative of the neoclassical genre. Taking its cues from the ancient Greeks and Romans. neoclassicism is a stark contrast to the boisterous baroque and rococo styles. In neoclassical architecture. less is more. In this building. you can observe the simple. pure lines. symmetry and mathematical proportions key to this architectural style.
