3.1 Manual Bayeu's Frescos
The frescos in the cupula. the transept and the grand nave of this church were painted in 1807 by Carthusian monk Manuel Bayeu (Born in Saragossa. 1740-1815). who also happens to be Goya’s brother-in-law. In these frescoes you will find scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. such as the Birth. the Presentation of the Virgin. the Marriage of the Virgin. the Transfiguration. the Assumption. the Trinity in Heaven. different allegories. the Three Marys before the Sepulchre. and the Supper at Emmaus. There are notable figures on the pendentives of the main dome dedicated to the great heroines of the Old Testament: Judith. Esther. Deborah and Jael – four of the eight strong women of the Bible. In terms of technique. fresco painting is very demanding. Painting on walls and floors with colors dissolved in water and lime over a layer of plaster requires speed and great skill.
