1. Ancient Carthusian (1309-1835) Palace of King Sancho

James II. the first exclusive monarch of the Kingdom of Majorca. built this building in as a residence so that his son Sancho could find a relief to the asthma disease he suffered from. It is believed that it was built on the site of an old Moorish palace of a Wāli named Mussa. from which the name Valldemossa derives. In 1399. King Martin I of Aragon. known as King Martin the Human. ceded all royal possessions in Valldemossa to the Carthusian friars. The friars founded the monastery and transformed the parade ground into a cloister and cemetery. the five salons into cells. the prison into a refectory. the pantry into a sacristy. and the kitchen into a church. In 1835. it passed into private hands after the Confiscations of Mendizábal. when it was put on the market via public auction. The non-productive land and property of the Church or religious orders went to increase the national wealth and create a bourgeoisie and middle class of farm owners.
